Glowing tells the stories of six protagonists from New Delhi, Seoul and Nairobi. They all have one thing in common: they have been trying to whiten their skin. For some of them, it’s the desire to fit in, for others the complete opposite, to stand out. In all cases, however, it’s a reaction to external social pressure, beauty standards and ideals of a perfect life. In Glowing, the skin bleaching is, above all, a metaphor for the modern consumer world which inevitably puts expectations on an individual and that creates feelings of inadequacy. One might decide to deal with them by choosing superficial solutions such as skin bleaching. Even though the protagonists’ stories are different, all of them experience a profound conflict between their own individuality and the demands of the society.
