Antón Gandarias follows the traces of his uncle, Ánjel Lekuon, whose life was marked by the Spanish Civil War and World War II. After many wartime vicissitudes, Ánjel was deported to the Hradištko concentration camp near Prague, where he was murdered on the orders of SS officers. Antón discovers, however, that Ánjel's ashes were preserved thanks to the heroic act of the director of the Prague crematorium, František Suchý, and his son. They preserved the names and ashes of more than 2,200 victims of the Nazi regime, despite orders from the Nazis. Among the urns they buried in the garden of the crematorium is the ashes of Ánjel Lekuona. More than 40 years later, Antón travels to Bohemia to retrieve the urn and bury his ancestor in his native country in the Basque Country.
