In a remote factory, where women and children monotonously sew buttons, a cracked button is discarded and escapes onto the road. During its journey through the sewer, it briefly saves a drowning beetle, which ultimately perishes. The button ends up with a girl, who uses it as an eye for her stuffed rabbit. After an explosion and ensuing chaos, the button ends up at an exhibition, where it becomes a symbol. At the opening, visitors have black holes instead of eyes, while the girl, whose eyes remain, covers them, and cracked buttons flow around her. The factory starts mass-producing buttons, and the world stops. The girl retrieves a dead beetle from a puddle, which then flies away as a symbol of a new beginning.
