Preschooler Pepi is active and cheerful during the day, but she gets scared at night. In the dimly lit children’s room, the Black Princess from a fairy tale lives in the root cupboard. When Pepi's younger brother has an accident and Pepi and her mother go to the hospital, Pepi realizes that her mother is also tiny because she is scared for her brother. Pepi comforts her mother and learns that even adults get scared. After they return home, Pepi’s mother, also frightened, encounters the Black Princess. Pepi comforts her mother, and they both hide in the cupboard, where fear turns into fun. They manage to shrink the princess and put her back in the cupboard, feeling stronger together.
