Poland in the 19th century. Despite Father Maciej's insistence, he resolutely refuses to take over his duties and administer their rural district, which is struggling with a violent pagan sect of Aquarians. The sect's goal is to to fulfill the prophecy and begin the reign of the "God of the Lakes". Maciej hates water in any form. He wants to escape with his secret girlfriend Hanka and to continue his lavish lifestyle in the city. Everything changes when his missing mother returns after ten years. She's in a coma and needs to recover. Maciej discovers that he may be the only person who can to help his mother with her "strange" illness. He himself suffers from the same symptoms and has been treated with drugs for years.
