A bittersweet comedy set in 1984 in the period of Real Socialism. For political reasons, Bedřich Mára has had to leave a position as a studio head at Prague’s Academy of Art. He is not allowed to exhibit, and has been shunted to the periphery of interest and lucrative commissions. He and his ceramicist wife and two sons live in a small apartment on the outskirts of Prague. In contrast to Bedřich’s family stands that of the elementary school principal Míla Břečka. Comrade Míla and his ambitious wife, Bedřich’s student from the academy, have long gone with the Communist flow. They find justification for their behavior in the traditional stance: ‘Someone’s got to swim along with them to make things better; someone’s got to make that sacrifice!’
