This love story between students Jana and Tomáš begins in Prague immediately after the founding of the first Czechoslovak Republic (1918). Their impulsive ‘escape to Budín’ means liberation for the unhappy Jana from a mentally unstable mother. But the move also marks the beginning of a fateful marriage. The lovers settle on a large farm in Slovakia owned by Tomáš’s vital and unconventional father Štefan. Soon after the wedding, Jana recognizes Tomáš’s self-indulgence and inner emptiness, and she and Štefan draw closer together. The marital crisis is mirrored in the ineluctable decline of the farm. The family tries to make a go of it in Vienna but must wait until their return to prospering Prague before finding new hope. The move, however, brings something different to each of them…
