A portrait of a politician whose life story embodies the last fifty years of Czechoslovak history. Jaroslav Šabata is presented in the film in the context of historical events that have had a direct bearing on his life and work – the 1950s, the Prague Spring, normalization, Charter 77, November 1989, the break-up of the federation, and Czech politics in the years since. A map of the quest for a new social order, a new democracy, navigating the blunders and achievements of one man’s life.
