Novelist Božena Němcová and her publisher are working on The Grandmother. The reason is more than obvious – Němcová is in financial trouble and the publisher senses a business opportunity in the Czech National Revival. In the movie’s second storyline, Němcová returns to her childhood, revealing the real truth to the audience. Grandmother arrives at the Old Bleachery after a 20-year absence. It isn’t Maria Novotná, though. It is, in fact, her neighbor Mareš, who gradually wins over the whole Prošek family and even Princess Zaháňská. The publisher is not impressed with Němcová’s version of the story, however, and eventually rewrites the entire book himself. That is why the original manuscript of the novel does not exist today. The situation culminates with the real grandmother’s arrival, followed by a surprising revelation. The whole family has a dilemma...
