The film documentary Manes at the Waterfront sketches the history of the eponymous structure from its erection during the First Republic (the period between the world wars) until the present day. This important gallery and a center of social life has always been utilized in ways that reflected the cultural needs and the social atmosphere of different historical periods. Recently, the building has been thoroughly renovated, which has caused its form once again to be in search of new content. The film combines a report on the progress of the renovation with a great deal of archival, documentary as well as staged materials. It presents the views of architects, gallerists, artists, curators and other people who are associated with this architecturally exceptional structure, for Mánes belongs among the best known symbols of the city of Prague.
